Foreign Language Support for Researchers

The Language faculty provides foreign language assistance to those engaged in research. This can take many different forms, such as tuition to enable researchers to converse in a different language in order to conduct fieldwork, or the translation of relevant texts, or the transcription of interviews.

This support is available in a wide range of languages including English as a Foreign Language, Japanese, French, Polish, Urdu, German, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Italian, Punjabi, Mandarin, Cantonese, Dutch, Greek (ancient and modern) and Latin but please contact us if there are other languages you need assistance in as we do offer others and our range is constantly expanding.

If you are interested in using our services for researchers please contact us with your basic requirements and we will get back to you as soon as possible to arrange an initial consultation.

International Student Scheme - Full Programme (also suitable for academics going to work abroad)

With the rise in tuition fees in England, studying for a degree abroad not only offers students the prospect of enjoying an amazing and unsurpassable experience, but a cheaper alternative to attending university in parts of the United Kingdom.

We offer advice and guidance on studying, living and working abroad and also support you through the process of applying to a university abroad, including meeting foreign language requirements and seeking out possible funding.

This guidance comes together with our language provision.  We cover the first five of six levels of the Common European Framework for languages, which we offer in separate units. *The sixth level is fluency which we feel can only be achieved through spending time in a country where the target language is spoken. We are more than happy to take complete beginners, as well as intermediate and advanced students. In an initial consultation we will carry out an assessment with you to help us determine which level is appropriate for you and what areas to concentrate on in your sessions.  The levels are approximately equivalent to the following: (N.B. These are the levels you will have reached at the end of each block).

  • A1 - Elementary
  • A2 - GCSE
  • B1 - AS Level
  • B2 - A2 Level
  • C1 - Undergraduate
  • (C2 - Graduate - Fluent - only acheivable with time abroad) *

We cover a range of topics within each unit, as would be the case with any course or qualification undertaken anywhere, but there is an emphasis on knowledge and language relevant to moving abroad and studying at university.

Each unit comprises up to 30 hours of one to one, face to face, language tuition, depending on how much you need to reach that level. In addition to the language teaching hours you also receive an initial consultation, an assessment session and a university information and guidance session.

A number of universities in Europe are now starting to offer degrees taught in English. If you are hoping to follow this route, or are taking part in the Erasmus or Socrates schemes, you may wish to take just one unit appropriate to your current level where we can provide language tuition to help you make the most of your time abroad and give you advice and guidance on living in the relevant country, (such as how to register with a doctor for example) and on any legal requirements you may need to fulfil.

If you are interested in taking part in our International Student Scheme, please contact us with your basic requirements and we will get back to you as soon as possible to arrange an initial consultation.
